Description: Being a branch of linguistics, sociolinguistics has emerged from interdisciplinary research in a number of study domains of the cultural anthropology, in particular sociology and dialectology, psychology, philosophy and language. The two main current trends of theoretical discussion in sociolinguistics may be defined as follows:
1.     Sociolinguistics defined as  an interdisciplinary research discipline;
2.     Sociolinguistics reflecting an enlarged focus of its source disciplines: sociology and linguistics.
These two definitions have specified the object of sociolinguistics, which includes sociolinguistic issues considered either within a narrow research study, i.e. an extended study of language which Labov describes as “linguistic studies in a social context”, as well as within a larger field of study consisting of research drawn alongside Fishman’s perspective “Who speaks, in which dialect, with whom, when, where, what about, under which social circumstances and having what expectations?
The Conference “Sociolinguistic Studies in Albania: Achievements, Current State and Perspectives” endeavors to highlight the linguistic variety and diversity conditioned by linguistic and nonlinguistic variables which characterize sociolinguistics.
Aim: By valuing what has already been achieved in this field, the conference aims at bringing concrete contributions to the field of sociolinguistics and determining the perspective of these approaches; perspective which is closely connected to the further development of sociolinguistics both within the frame of Albanian linguistics and in a larger context.
